This winter, the Hot Toddy Bread Club has started baking bread for local Todd bread affionados. The next Hot Toddy Bread Club delivery and pick-up will be on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the Todd Mercantile, in beautiful downtown Todd, from 10am-4pm. This week’s selections are:

Sour Dough Bread Ready for Sale

Sour Dough Bread, Hard Rolls (1/2 doz per bag), Yogurt Grain Rolls (1/2 doz per bag), Dark German Rye Bread, Light Rye Bread, Bulgarian Buttermilk Bread and Brown ‘N Serve French Baquettes (2 per bag). Cost for each item $5.00.

The Hot Toddy Bread Club will bake bread for it’s customers twice a month available for pick-up the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month. Delivery and pick-up locations are the Todd Mercantile and Bakery and the Ashe County Farmer’s Market.

Dance at the Mercantile

The next dance at the Todd Mercantile is Friday, February 26, 2010 at 730pm. Live music by Laurel Creek String Band and Connie Carringer calling. Admission at the door-$5/adult; children under the age of 12 admitted free. So, put on your dancin’ shoes and come join in the fun! See you there!

Liberty Parade in Todd

The 4th of July is a special holiday in beautiful downtown Todd, NC. Every year for the past 4 years, my sister and the Elkland Art Center staff put on a fabulous parade called the Liberty Parade. EAC makes all the costumes and everyone is encouraged to participate. This year the Liberty Parade honored the New River-the lifeblood of the community of Todd. As usual, the parade was well attended, it was a glorious day and everyone had a terrific time. Thank you Elkland Art Center for a job well done! See you all again next year!

Pastry and Dessert Trays

This dessert tray was done for a wedding that took place this past May. The wedding party had rented a vacation home and wanted pastry and dessert trays that would be casual and easy for folks to nibble at for several days. This particular tray was made up of peanut brownies, cheese cake squares, petit fours and chocolates. The other dessert trays had butter and cherry tarts and chocolate strawberries and dried apricots.

The pastry trays included apple, cherry or blueberry turnovers, lemon or apricot cream cheese danish, muffins, cinnamon twists and eclairs.

Thanks for the nice note… The whole wedding thing was much better than I expected… including your stuff … even though I had high expectations…..… My family went wild over the different turnovers taking them all back to Valdese of the 1960s… The B…s were the Cheesecake/Chocolate freaks… Fruits lasted <10 hours… I did not get any…. DA

Your treats were a big hit with both Eastern NC family…and Western NC family…as well as the Irish, Australians, and Chinese attending… Cooler was a good idea.. When we arrived Friday, we divided them into Friday night, Sat breakfast, Sat night, …. thru to Tuesday breakfast.. Needless to say they were a big hit with all. You did a wonderful job on the selection and quality…. DA

Saturdays are Sour Dough Bread days

Saturday. I get up early and try to beat the morning coffee crowd-never works. People are always here before the first fresh stuff comes out of the oven. If I could only clone myself and if only the cloned self didn’t have to sleep and could bake all night then maybe I would have all things ready when the first customer walked through the door. Then, I would be a real bakery. But, alas, this is the Todd Mahal Bakery, where baked goods are done in due time. And the wait is always worth it.

Bread’s Out! Anytime after 2pm. Freshen the starter and make dough. Saturdays are always sour dough bread days. Crusty outside, soft, chewy inside. Just a slight sour dough tang to the flavor. Made with local molasses, organic flours and pure mountain waters, the bread is best eaten when fresh. Grab a chilled glass of white or a hearty glass of red, along with some Ashe County cheeses and mountain apples-Mmmmmm, lunch is served the Todd Mahal Bakery way. Picnic in the park. Simple, country sweetness at it’s best.

Counter Culture Coffee Now Being Served

Smell the Coffee! I have made the leap and instead of serving cheap store brand ground coffee , I am now serving a premium organic shade-grown coffee from a wonderful company called Counter Culture Coffee. I grind freshly roasted coffee and then do a cold brew process so the coffee is very smooth and not bitter. The espresso is divine. This month I am using GAYO coffee from Aceh, Sumatra. The divine espresso is Espresso Toscano. I’m still praticing my coffee techniques,and I don’t do anything too fancy; but, stop in and try a cup. Taste testers and experimentors and those in the coffee know are welcome.
